During Semester 2 of Level 4 BA Hons Fashion Design, we were set the theme of ‘Black and White’ to explore as creatively as possible. As someone who likes to work with colour, this caused me to focus differently and look at shape and discover silhouettes I enjoyed instead. Inspired by my collage work, I combined this with bulbous silhouettes and decided to try to create a surreal and obscure world through my stylized illustrations, unusual muses and most importantly, my abnormal clothing designs. I wanted my project to have no attachment to gender norms and to produce a series of garment designs that could be worn by anyone.
The main aim of my project was that I wanted to give people an insight into what the inner workings of my brain feel like to me: an emotion I can’t convey in words. I made a conscious effort to focus a lot more on garment details in this project than I did in the previous one, which paid off enormously as they feel like well thought out, considered garments. In the future, I would like to apply sewing techniques and combine my knowledge of construction more into my design work to open up a broader range of design possibilities. Overall, I am very pleased with my final lineup and the garment that I physically constructed, as I believe they will get people talking and they convey a new outlook into fashion that I haven’t seen before.
